Moving Away from WordPress in 2024 - A Return to Open Source Values

Table of Contents
A New Beginning
I’m excited to announce the launch of my new website! After years of running on WordPress, I’ve made the decision to move to a simpler, more focused platform built with Hugo and Hugo Blox Builder.
Why Leave WordPress?
While WordPress has been a significant part of my journey and the broader web ecosystem, I’ve been increasingly concerned about the direction Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com) has been taking, particularly in their relationship with the open source community.
The recent controversies surrounding WordPress’s approach to the open source community have been disappointing. While I acknowledge their right to protect their interests, the current situation feels more like a battle driven by corporate greed rather than the community-first approach that originally made WordPress great.
As we head into 2025, seeing such conflicts in what should be a collaborative, community-driven space is particularly disheartening. The open source spirit that built the internet is too valuable to be compromised by commercial interests.
Embracing a New Approach
This new website represents a return to basics:
- Simplicity: A clean, fast, and focused experience without the bloat
- Performance: Static site generation for maximum speed and minimal server requirements
- Independence: Full control over my content and platform choices
- Open Source Values: Built entirely with open source tools that still prioritize community over profit
Technical Benefits
The switch to Hugo brings several technical advantages:
- Lightning Fast: Static site generation means instant page loads
- Security: No database, no PHP, dramatically reduced attack surface
- Version Control: Everything in Git, perfect audit trail
- Markdown: Content in a format that will stand the test of time
- No Lock-in: Easy to migrate, all content in simple text files
What’s Next?
While I’ll be keeping my old blog posts as reference material, i’ve hidden them from the public view: they are more than 10 years old, in terms of SEO they are pre-jurassic, I’m excited to start fresh with new content focused on:
- Technical SEO insights (maybe)
- Digital strategy (probably)
- AI integration in marketing (for sure)
- Industry observations and commentary (that’s a given)
What can i say? I’m getting old and grumpy !
